The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show has made its comeback this year after six years. The fashion show was on a six year break due to the controversies that stemmed from its lack of inclusivity.
The infamous fashion show made its comeback this year starring peoples favorite models such as Adriana Lima, Taylor Hill, Kate Moss, Bella Hadid, Gigi Hadid, and many more. The brand’s aim was to add more inclusivity by adding transgender models such as Alex Consani and Valentina Sampaio. The brand also featured plus sized models such as Ashley Graham and Paloma Elessser as a part of their runway this year. The addition of plus sized models raised controversy despite being demanded by critics in previous years. Many have gone on to say that Victoria’s Secret models are supposed to be thin and plus sized models should have their own show with brands that better represent them. In my opinion, people want to see their own body types on screen and see themselves being represented. Any brand that sells inclusive sizing should have models of all sizes on their runway.
That being said, another point of disappointment for viewers this year was the production and performances. Victoria’s Secret is known for its on-stage production. This year, the stage was very simple and did not have a theme which is quite contrary to previous years. Along with that, some of the performances were underwhelming – The Victoria’s Secret fashion show has had electric performances in past years with singers such as The Weeknd, Taylor Swift, Shawn Mendes, etc. As beautiful as they were, the performances this year were taking away from the models by crowding the stage with back-up dancers. This years fashion show felt more like a concert featuring models, not like a Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show.
The models were gorgeous, but they lacked the classic Victoria’s Secret Bombshell look. VS models are known for their huge blowouts and this year lacked that aspect. The VS model blowout is an iconic look and should’ve been incorporated into the show this year for its comeback year. Overall, for a show that came back after six years, it did not give the energy that critics such as myself wanted it to give. Maybe it was a budgeting issue, but the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show did not “blow me out of the water” this year as it has in the past.
